Each February, a quiet anticipation settles in among our volunteers as the first signs of spring begin to appear. Among the earliest observed are the eastern bluebirds, pairing up as early as mid-month and beginning to claim their territories, build nests, and prepare for the nesting season ahead.
Like prothonotary warblers and wood ducks, bluebirds depend on tree cavities for nesting. But with tree loss from age, storm damage, and historical mining, many of these natural nesting spaces have disappeared. In response, we’ve introduced carefully placed nesting boxes, each designed and positioned to meet the specific habitat needs of the species they support.
Since 2018, we’ve seen steady success with our main focus species, Eastern Bluebirds and Prothonotary Warblers, with use also recorded by Carolina Chickadees and Carolina Wrens. Each season, we clean and repair the boxes, monitor nesting activity, and report our observations through Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s citizen science program, NestWatch. This program contributes to a broader understanding of bird populations.
This project not only helps support the survival of these bird species, but it also provides a meaningful sense of reward in seeing the results of our work. The time spent in the field also brings us joy as we walk from box to box, watching for flashes of blue or yellow in the fields and trees, listening for calls, and carefully checking each box for signs of life. It’s in these moments that the story of restoration becomes real. The habitat, once damaged, now provides the food, water, and shelter these species need to thrive again.
This work is more than data collection, it’s a chance to witness renewal up close. And every new nest, every fledgling, feels like a small but meaningful victory.
We love being out in the field, where each walk brings its own discoveries, subtle changes in the habitat, unexpected encounters, and the steady return of life across the landscape.
